Bunting and bubbly on day to remember

The Royal wedding may have been hundreds of miles away in the capital but the celebrations for the big day spread far and wide, with communities throughout Yorkshire home to traditional street parties to mark the union.

Areas across South Yorkshire broke out the bunting and raised their glasses in tribute to the happy couple at a series of organised street parties.

Residents of Sterndale Road in Sheffield came together for their own wedding reception, decorating the street with Union Jacks and celebrating with sandwiches and the odd glass of bubbly to toast the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The scenes were replicated throughout the city, with patriots young and old gathering in front of televisions to watch the ceremony and then heading outside to celebrate with their neighbours.

On Sheffield’s Bromwich Road in Woodseats, Simon Bettison and his six-year-old daughter Erin shared a happy smile and proudly displayed their Union Jacks, both in flag form and the shape of a hankie knotted over Mr Bettison’s head.

Fellow residents Alan Cooper and Lisa Pound also joined in the flag waving in warm spring weather, as well as sporting a series of festive hats to revel in the occasion.

Friends and neighbours on the Sheffield’s Beauchief Rise also came together for a street party, where once again flag-waving, eating, drinking and above all laughter could be seen and heard across the street as the city marked the occasion.
