Calm before the storm

BANK holiday walkers climb up on to Ilkley Moor past the Cow and Calf rocks but a weather warning has been issued for Yorkshire as thousands of people return to work after the New Year break.

The region is set to be lashed by fierce gale-force winds of up to 80mph and heavy rain this morning and the Met Office is also warning that travel may face serious disruption during the rush hour.

Another warning has been issued for tomorrow as strong winds push in a band of rain from the west. Some areas of higher ground in the region could see two inches of rain.

Although temperatures will remain a relatively mild 10C (50F) today with some sunny spells, gale force winds and blustery showers could make for hazardous travelling conditions. Sleet and snow is possible in the North York Moors and Peak District.

It will stay windy for the rest of the week, with sunshine and showers on Thursday and more persistent rain on Friday.

Warnings have been issued for nearly every region of the UK, with forecasters predicting localised flooding in parts of Wales and north-west England. A deep area of low pressure will see significant winds of up to 80mph and gusts of 50-60mph in northern and western regions.
