Canadian body parts suspect arrested

A Canadian porn actor accused of videotaping a murder and posting the body parts of his victim to the country’s top political parties has been arrested in Germany.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, 29, was arrested yesterday in an internet cafe in Berlin after a person recognised him and alerted police.

Magnotta is wanted by Canadian authorities on first-degree murder and other charges.

He is suspected of killing Jun Lin – a 33-year-old Chinese university student he dated – and posting the victim’s body parts to Canadian political parties.

Berlin police spokeswoman Kerstin Ziesmer said: “Officers arrested him on the site, he did not put up any resistance. He says he is the wanted person.”

The suspect is being questioned and will be brought behind closed doors before a judge, who will read out the international arrest warrant later.

Interpol has placed Magnotta, who was last believed to be in Paris, on the equivalent of its most-wanted list.

Canadian police suspect Magnotta filmed the killing. The video, posted online, shows a man stabbing another man with an ice pick while the victim lies naked and tied up.

The first man later reveals he has slashed the other man’s throat. He also dismembers the corpse and performs sexual acts with it.

Police said Magnotta’s birth name is Eric Clinton Newman and he is also known by the name Vladimir Romanov. They described him as white, 5ft 8ins tall, with blue eyes and black hair.

In a separate development, police in Berlin have arrested a man on suspicion he killed and dismembered his wife, possibly in front of her six children.

Police said the 30-year-old woman was killed today in Kreuzberg and then partially dismembered before her husband, 32, was taken into custody.

They say the six children, between the ages of one and 13 living in her apartment were being looked after by child services.

It was not clear whether the woman was killed in the apartment or on the roof, and police say they can’t give further details.
