In case you hadn’t noticed... Summer’s over

SUMMER appeared to be officially over today as heavy rain and powerful winds swept across the region.

Bradford’s Centenary Square was lashed with heavy rain making for an uncomfortable walk to work. In Leeds the picture was little better with strong winds whipping across the city.

The poor weather was especially dangerous in the south where a pier has been closed as a precautionary measure after a barge was forced into it by high winds and a heavy swell.

Southend Pier in Essex - the longest pleasure pier in the world - will be closed today to allow engineers to assess damage from a contractor’s barge tethered to the pier.

A statement on Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s website said the barge was forced into the pier by high winds and a heavy swell.

Earlier this week the Met Office said that autumn would prove wet and windy with heavy rain, strong winds, thunder, lightning and hail are all predicted over the coming week across the whole country.

The Met Office is considering weather to issue severe weather warnings, according to forecaster Tom Morgan.
