Children injured as bouncy castle breaks free in the wind at Whitby

A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD child has been airlifted to hospital with suspected spinal and leg injuries after a bouncy castle became loose in the wind on the North Yorkshire coast.

Three children suffered injuries in the incident in Whitby yesterday afternoon.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said the force had received reports of a “bouncy castle becoming loose and blowing about in the wind” at around 2.40pm yesterday.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene.

The incident happened near the White House Hotel on the West Cliff at Whitby.

The hotel declined to comment yesterday.

The most seriously injured youngster was a seven-year-old boy who was airlifted to James Cook Hospital, in Middlesbrough, with broken bones.

A force spokesman said his condition was not believed to be life threatening.

He said a seven-year-old girl thought to have suffered concussion and a nine-year-old boy, who broke a bone in his leg, were taken by ambulance to Scarborough District Hospital.

The spokesman said: “All three remain in hospital in stable conditions.

“The bouncy castle was recovered with the help of officers from the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

“There is no longer any police involvement with this incident and the circumstances leading the to bouncy leaving its tether will be conducted by officers from the Environmental Health Department at Scarborough District Council.”
