Daley’s delight: Games hope makes first dive

THE final countdown to the London 2012 Olympics got under way with a splash last night as teenage medal hopeful Tom Daley performed the first dive at the stunning new £269m Aquatics Centre at Olympic Park.

With exactly one year to go until the opening ceremony of next summer’s Olympic Games, a cheering crowd gathered to watch Daley perform an inward one-and-a-half piked somersault from the same 10-metre board from which he hopes to launch his medal bid next year.

The opening of the gleaming centre means all six of the primary Olympic venues are nearly ready.

After his dive, Daley said: “It was great to think that is what it is going to be like next year. It’s just incredible. The atmosphere was great with the amount of cheers, so it is going to be awesome.”

Other celebrations to commemorate the landmark date yesterday included the unveiling of the official 2012 Olympic medals.
