‘Devastated’ small businesses put cost
of flooding at £830m

SMALL businesses have lost more than £830m because of the floods, a new study has revealed.

The study which was carried out by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), showed that the average cost per business in flood-hit areas across the country was £1,531.

A third of small firms in flood-hit areas suffered from reduced demand for goods and services, while transport disruption hindered the movement of goods and supplies and led to staff absences in many businesses, according to the FSB.

FSB national chairman John Allan said: “In the past few weeks we have heard countless stories from our members who were left devastated by some of the worst flooding on record.

“Not only have they had to cope with a lack of demand for their services, many have had to close.

“That is why government support has been welcome, and with many still affected, why that support needs to be kept under review.

“We also know small businesses are worried they will find it increasingly difficult and considerably more expensive to insure their businesses.”

Mr Allan added: “We want the Government and the insurance industry to look again at the support that they have in place
for small businesses in flood-hit areas and see whether there is more help that they can provide to ensure they have access to
adequate and affordable insurance.”

A Business Department spokesman said: “The country has been hit by the wettest weather since records began and we are determined to do what we can to help flood-hit businesses get back on their feet.

“That is why we have announced a range of measures including creating a £10m fund to get assistance to small businesses quickly.

“The Government continues to work with the Association of British Insurers to ensure insurance claims are paid promptly and correctly. We are also providing 100 per cent business rates relief for three months and have deferred business rates payments by three months.”
