Director wins icon award

Film director Julien Temple, who documented the rise of the Sex Pistols, has been declared a music icon.

Temple, whose work includes The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle which starred Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs alongside members of the punk band, received the icon award at last night’s UK Music Video Awards.

The 60-year-old, whose daughter Juno has appeared in films including The Other Boleyn Girl and Atonement, has made music video for acts including David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Duran Duran and Whitney Houston.

His 1986 musical version of Absolute Beginners, starring Patsy Kensit and with music by The Style Council and Bowie, famously flopped but he has gone on to make acclaimed documentaries about subjects including the Glastonbury Festival.
