Disappearances to be highlighted at match

THE ongoing disappearance of 20-year-old student Megan Roberts and 39-year-old Ed Machin will be highlighted at a football game today.

Fans at the York versus Cheltenham Town game will be asked to support the work of Missing People, a charity which tries to reunite missing people with their families.

It follows the disappearance on the same day last month of York St John University student Megan Roberts, who is feared to have fallen into the River Ouse, in the early hours of January 23, and Mr Machin, who was last seen in Bempton later that day.

The charity encourages people to sign up so if someone goes missing locally they can be contacted via social media or e-mail to get involved in searches.

Peter Lawrence, the father of missing York chef Claudia Lawrence, who disappeared nearly five years ago, will be at the event.

He said: “It is distressing to have both Edward and Megan missing along with Claudia and my thoughts are with their families and friends.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to help the charity by volunteering, sharing the appeals and by signing up to receive alerts at today’s game.”

Police community support officers are continuing to scour the River Ouse in search of Miss Roberts.

Daily checks have been carried out for the past fortnight along the river between the Millennium Bridge and Clifton Bridge. Police say the most likely scenario is that the 20-year-old, from Wetherby, fell in the River Ouse while “affected by alcohol”.

Searches at Bempton for Mr Machin who was dropped off there on January 23 have drawn a blank. Police believe he travelled by train to Scarborough and took a taxi to Bempton with two other train passengers after they missed their connection.

North Yorkshire Police said yesterday there were no “ongoing searches.”
