DJ Blackburn
speaks out on Savile ‘sin’

Veteran DJ Tony Blackburn said it is a “sin” that Jimmy Savile will not pay for his crimes.

Blackburn, who worked at Radio One with Savile for many years, said none of his colleagues “liked him particularly”.

He told Piers Morgan: “He was an oddball. I didn’t like him as a person.”

He added: “There were always rumours about him but I never saw him do anything wrong. I didn’t realise how bad he was.”

Appearing on Morgan’s Life Stories show, Blackburn added: “It’s an absolute tragedy and I think the sin is that he’s not around to answer for it.”

Blackburn also recalled his time working for Radio Caroline where he saved Kenny Everett’s life when his dazed colleague, who was “obviously on something”, decided to step off a gangway and walk to Frinton across the North Sea.

“I took him to one side and put him in his cabin, and told somebody he was in there,” said Blackburn.
