Duke rides out at 89

THE Duke of Edinburgh – who will be 90 in June – drives a carriage on a tour of the grounds of Windsor Castle on the first day of the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

The event, which began yesterday and runs until Sunday, attracts thousands of equestrian enthusiasts and takes place in the private grounds of Windsor Castle. It started in 1943 when the Royal Windsor Horse Show Club was founded to hold equestrian events for charity.

The Royal Family has a great affection for the annual fixture and The Queen still attends each year along with other relatives, and The Duke of Edinburgh regularly competes in carriage driving competitions. In 2008, Her Majesty presented His Royal Highness with the Royal Horse Society’s Queen’s Medal for Services to Equestrianism during the show.
