Emmerdale beat for police series star

Actress Trudie Goodwin has found a new beat after The Bill, landing a role in ITV1’s Emmerdale.

The 59-year-old actress, best known for playing Sgt June Ackland in the axed police drama, will play Georgia Sharma, the mother of Jai and Nikhil.

Ms Goodwin, the real-life mum of Elly Jackson of chart act La Roux, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be playing Georgia in Emmerdale. She is a difficult-to-please woman who is set to make life difficult for Charity.”

The Bill ended last year after 26 years.

Mr and Mrs Sharma arrive in Emmerdale to meet Charity Tate after their son Jai announces his engagement to the feisty businesswoman.

Jai’s workaholic father Rishi Sharma will be played by Bhasker Patel, whose previous TV credits include Trial and Retribution and Holby Blue.

The Sharmas also bring their flirty daughter Priya, played by former Grange Hill star Fiona Wade, who is set to cause a stir in the village.

The arrival of their family is set to make life complicated for the Sharma brothers, played by Chris Bisson and Rik Makarem.

The Sharmas quickly make their mark with a wedding to arrange, but Georgia is keen to ensure Charity is the right woman for her eldest son.
