Ex-call centre to be turned into police HQ

POLICE chiefs yesterday announced plans to move almost 300 staff to an out-of-town force headquarters which was formerly the home of a building society call centre.

South Yorkshire Police has been searching for a new HQ for several years and last night announced that it had completed the purchase of Carbrook House, in the east of the city.

It means the current city centre building at Snig Hill will now become a police station and district headquarters for Sheffield, to replace West Bar police station which is now closed.

Staff who work at leased buildings such as Atlas Court in the east of Sheffield will join HQ staff from Snig Hill at Carbrook House, which used to house staff working for Abbey National.

Chief constable Meredydd Hughes said the cost of buying and refurbishing the Carbrook House premises is around £5m, which has been largely funded by the sale of out-of-date properties.

He added: “With excellent car parking facilities and close to public transport links, the new headquarters will allow us to close expensive, leased buildings and provide accommodation for staff, while also providing a great deal for the taxpayer.”

Charles Perryman, chairman of South Yorkshire Police Authority, added: “Moving out of Sheffield city centre will provide the force with improved access links to Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster. We have also been able to secure an excellent price for the building.”
