Ex-Labour Minister in hacking payout

A Labour former Minister has settled his phone hacking claim against the publisher of the now defunct News of the World for £20,000.

Kevin Brennan, previously an education and business minister, confirmed the pay out from News Group Newspapers in the Register of Members’ Financial Interests.

Mr Brennan was an assistant to former health secretary Alan Milburn, then Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, in 2004, before being appointed a junior whip in 2005 and a senior Government whip in 2006.

He progressed to a junior ministerial role in the Department for Children, Schools and Families in 2007, moving to the Cabinet Office in 2008 and then securing the position of further education, skills, apprenticeships and consumer affairs minister in 2009.

He is now a Shadow Education Minister and has represented Cardiff West since 2001.

News Group Newspapers previously published the News of the World before the paper closed in 2011 and also publishes The Sun.

Mr Brennan declined to comment further.
