Family to mark inspirational first run by heroic Jane Tomlinson

SHe set the bar so very high, and now the family of Yorkshire cancer campaigner Jane Tomlinson is aiming to follow in her footsteps as they attempt to run two marathons and cycle from Paris to London to mark the 10th anniversary of her first London marathon.

Mrs Tomlinson inspired people around the globe with her determined fight to raise money for charity and having become the first terminally-ill breast cancer patient to complete the London Marathon, she then continued to amaze with endurance events which included cycling from Rome to Leeds and a 2,500-mile bike ride across America in 2006

The mother-of-three from Leeds, who died in September 2007 aged 43, raised £1.85m in seven years, and her family continue to raise funds for her charity, the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.

Now, with the goal of taking the fund-raising tally to £5m, Mrs Tomlinson’s husband, Mike, 50, and their daughter Rebecca, 23, will run the Paris Marathon in April before jumping on their bikes the following day on a 600-mile bike journey that will take them back to Yorkshire and finish up in the capital in time for them to take part in the London Marathon.

Mr Tomlinson has set himself a personal challenge of running each marathon in under four hours 53 minutes – the time it took for his wife to run London.

“That day changed our lives as a family. So this time London will be amazingly emotional if I get to the finish – which I fully hope I will. What Jane did was beyond compare and I just want to mark it.”

He added: “Let’s hope Jane’s spirit sees me through.”
