Fashion slip as Dame Anna out of Vogue at Palace

The belted Chanel outfit left nowhere for the Queen to pin her Dame Commander’s insignia.

“She couldn’t find where to put the brooch,” said Dame Anna, 67, who edited American Vogue for three decades, and who received the accolade for her services to the fashion industry.

Also honoured by the Queen was the former bishop of Liverpool, who was knighted for his work with the families of the Hillsborough disaster.

Bishop James Jones, now assistant bishop in the Diocese of York, said he was “very humbled and honoured” to be recognised, but remained “mindful” of the injustice faced by relatives in the 28 years since the disaster.

He chaired the Hillsborough Independent Panel, credited by the families as being the first time they were listened to and taken seriously. The panel’s report, published in 2012, said a cover-up to shift the blame on to victims had taken place following the 1989 disaster in Sheffield.

The Times political cartoonist Peter Brookes, 73, joked with the Queen that Philip’s retirement had provided material for his drawings, as he received a CBE.

He said the monarch had commented that it must be “terribly interesting at the moment” to be creating political sketches.

“Yes - and yesterday was particularly interesting with your husband retiring,” Mr Brookes said.

1950s rock and roll star Marty Wilde, 78, was made an MBE, along with rowers Matthew Langridge, Constantine Louloudis and George Nash, who took gold at the Rio Olympics.
