Fighter muscles in

A village tug-of-war team hauled the fuselage of a vintage Hurricane fighter from the Yorkshire Air Museum to Elvington Village Green a mile away for celebrations to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Its wings followed by lorry and the aircraft was reassembled to form the centrepiece of the community’s celebrations. A vintage tractor was used to return the Hawker back to its home at the museum yesterday.

Villagers asked the museum to help with the loan of the aircraft to help maintain the community’s connection with the bomber command station at Elvington.

The link between the villagers and the RAF was forged during the Second World War and museum director Ian Reed said they were “honoured” to assist with the village’s celebrations.
