First steam engine built in 50 years starts work in Yorkshire

The Tornado – the first steam locomotive built in almost 50 years – is back in harness, marking 175 years of the Whitby-Pickering line.

It is the only A1 Peppercorn class engine in the world after the scrapping of all 49 originals in the 1960s. Her appearance on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway following winter maintenance was delayed last week by cable thieves.
