Fog causes disruption to flights

thousands of air passengers faced disruption yesterday as fog forced the cancellation and diversion of flights.

Leeds Bradford Airport was among a number of airports hit by the weather, leading to cancellations and delays for a number of flights.

Passengers were being advised to contact airlines and tour operators before setting off.

At Heathrow Airport in London more than 130 flights were cancelled because of fog and London City Airport suspended more than 40 and faced delays on others owing to similar problems.

At Heathrow, air traffic controllers reduced the rate at which flights were allowed to land.

Some airlines were re-booking passengers on other flights or arranging alternative accommodation for them, while some were being bussed to other airports or to their destinations.

The Met office issued a severe weather warning for eastern areas of England including parts of Yorkshire and the fog was expected to persist in some areas today.

Drivers were being urged to take extra care.
