Graduate set to launch cheerleading magazine

An enterprising young Leeds graduate is jumping for joy after literally making her dream come true by launching her own cheerleading magazine.

Charlotte Corner, recently awarded a first class honours degree in journalism from Leeds Met, originally created The Cheerleader as part of her course.

But now, after winning an award at the House of Lords for the innovative project, she has decided to officially launch the magazine.

Charlotte, who lives in Leeds, missed her graduation last
month to attend the Print Futures Award ceremony where she won a £1,500 prize for creating the publication.

She said: “I had to create a magazine for one of my last projects in my final year at Leeds Met. My boyfriend Nathan Cookson is a cheerleading coach and the idea to make The Cheerleader escalated after I had a dream that I created a cheerleading magazine for my coursework.

“I’ve never been a cheerleader myself, but I quickly realised that not only is the sport extremely popular in the UK, but there is a huge gap in the market for a niche publication dedicated to the cheerleading community. My goal is for it to be the Cosmopolitan for cheerleaders!”

Charlotte, who is also launching a website, wants the magazine to be quarterly and include cheerleading activities and tips.

She added: “The response I have had from the cheerleading community since I decided to take the magazine beyond my degree has been fantastic.”
