Hillsborough fundraisers plan to hit road again

Fundraisers aim to give children’s hospitals in Sheffield and Liverpool a boost by running 96 miles between the two cities in memory of the 96 fans who died at the Hillsborough disaster.

The run will begin on April 4, departing from the pitch at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium, and finish on the pitch at Anfield three days later.

It is the second run between the two stadiums after the team completed the feat last year – raising £15,000 for the Hillsborough Family Support Group and Hillsborough Justice Campaign.

This year the focus is on raising money for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital Charity.

Team leader Dominic Williams said: “One of the things we’re trying to do with this run is to keep the memory of Hillsborough alive in people’s minds, but also to help bring some good out of it – a brighter future.

“By linking the two cities in the run and raising money for both Alder Hey and Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital Charity, we hope to strengthen the bond between both cities.”

Steve Kelly, of the Hillsborough Justice Campaign, said: “As someone who lost a brother at Hillsborough, I feel something so good is at last coming out of something so bad.”

Liverpool Walton MP Steve Rotheram, who helped to launch the event, said: “I think anything that raises the profile and raises awareness, not just here but across the country, of what’s gone on for the last 23, nearly 24 years now, can only be good.”

Last year saw the Hillsborough Independent Panel’s publication of a damning report into the handling of the crowd crush at Hillsborough Stadium in 1989 which left 96 fans dead.

The report uncovered a massive cover-up, leading to an apology from Prime Minister David Cameron and the quashing of the 96 inquest verdicts of accidental death by the Attorney General.
