Inspirational life of crash victim attracts donations

An online charity fundraising appeal set up by a Yorkshire university student who was killed on flight MH17 has continued to attract donations in his memory.

Richard Mayne set up the JustGiving page six months ago to raise funds for the Kidasha charity, which helps disadvantaged children in Nepal.

Mr Mayne, who was originally from Leicester but was studying maths and finance at Leeds University, travelled to Nepal in March after being selected for a charity trek to the Mount Everest base camp.

The 20-year-old’s JustGiving page attracted hundreds of pounds of new donations after his death was confirmed on Friday.

It has taken the total raised for Kidasha to more than £2,700.

One of dozens of people who donated to the appeal over the weekend wrote on the JustGiving site: “Never met you, but the beautiful things people are saying about you make me wish I had had the pleasure.

“Trying to make a little good come from something so terrible. So much love to your family.”

Numerous other online tributes were also paid to Mr Mayne, who had carried out voluntary work at a school during his time in Nepal.

His girlfriend, Abby Clark, wrote on Facebook: “I honestly can’t believe what has happened and what I am writing.

“Reading through everyone’s messages to you makes me feel so proud to have been in your life, you have so many people in awe of you including myself.

“I just keep feeling like you’re going to walk in the kitchen and everything just be back to normal.

“I have so many happy memories of us that will stay with me forever, I just wish more than anything there could be future ones too.”
