Sir Jimmy – known to his devoted fans as JY – occupied the early afternoon slot on Radio 2 since he joined the station in 1973. He interviewed each Prime Minister of the day during that lengthy stint, as well as many other leading world figures. The show is now presented by Jeremy Vine.

Sir Jimmy said of his return: “It’s great to be making a programme for Radio 2 – especially with my mate Ken Bruce.”

Bruce said: “To be reunited with Sir Jimmy is a pleasure and a privilege. He’s a fantastic broadcaster with an amazing story. He’s also a great friend, so much so I even bought a car from him.”

Sir Jimmy – who had a successful singing career before turning to radio – joined Radio 1 at the station’s opening in 1967.
