Launch of the Titanic commemorated
Karl GRANT, 11, was in period costume at the quayside in Belfast as the 100th anniversary of the launch of the Titanic was marked at a special commemorative event yesterday. The luxury liner was launched in the city before famously sinking on her maiden transatlantic voyage in April 1912, the following year.
A single flare was fired above the city’s docklands to signify the exact moment at 12.13pm, 100 years ago, when the ill-fated liner rolled down the slipway and touched the water for the first time. All boats in the area around the Harland and Wolff shipyards then sounded their horns.
