‘Make the most of it’ before the clouds roll in

SUNSEEKERS are being urged to make the most of the warm weather as forecasters warn today’s high temperatures will not be the start of a heatwave.

Much of Yorkshire was bathed in sunshine as temperatures rose above 24C (75F) in some parts yesterday.

More warm weather and sunshine is expected today but experts warn that the highs will not last through the weekend.

The highest temperatures in the region were recorded yesterday in North Yorkshire, Linton-on-Ouse and Ravensworth, near Richmond, both reaching 24C

Today sunshine and temperatures of between 22 and 24C are expected in the region, although it is likely to be cooler along the east coast. However a spokeswoman for the MeteoGroup weather forecasting service warned that cloudy weather and possibly drizzle will reach the region over the weekend.

Experts have also ruled out a heatwave during the month which sees major events such as Wimbledon and Glastonbury.

The summer’s hottest temperature could be a blistering 33C (91F) in the south of England “but the general picture is for a mixed season, and one which will not be remembered as a classic”, according to the Met Office.

Yesterday’s sunshine provided the perfect start to the Bramham International Horse Trials.

The heat caught some spectators by surprise as they arrived for the opening of the four-day event wearing wellies.

Parts of the UK have enjoyed one of the warmest and driest springs for more than 100 years.

But while the south and east of Britain basked in balmy temperatures, the north and east of the country have remained wet.

Across the whole of England and Wales, it was the second driest spring since 1910.
