Mansion sold after six years for less than half asking price

In early 2008 the Halifax Road mansion appeared to have been sold for £3.5m but the deal fell through and it went back on the market for £3.3m in December.

James England, of estate agents Carter Jonas which has been marketing the property for 18 months, has closed the deal with a Huddersfield family who have declined to be named, for £1.9m.

The Grade 1 listed building was designed by Edgar Wood and built in 1902 in seven acres of landscaped grounds as a home for Sir Emmanuel Hoyle, a woollen cloth manufacturer.

Since then it has had various uses from being used by the fire service in the Second World War to serving as a teachers’ centre.

It was sold by Kirklees Council in 1995 and bought by a plastics company for £650,000.

English Heritage described it as an “outstanding” home, but it has been overtaken as Huddersfield’s most expensive property by The Mansion, Kirkburton, which Mr England said was sold within the last month for “just short of £3m”.
