Mobile stolen from woman dying in street

A man stole a mobile phone from a woman as she lay dying in the street, police said.

Ben Heney, 23, had gone over to the stricken 22-year-old woman, who it is suspected had moments before jumped from a high-rise car park in Manchester city centre.

As another member of the public tried to help, Heney was spotted on CCTV kneeling down beside the woman, whose phone was lying beside her body.

He was then seen to put something over the phone, which he then pulled away, and the phone had gone before he left the scene.

The young woman, believed to be a student, later died.

Heney, of Fulton Court, Hulme, was arrested within hours and jailed for 12 weeks for theft when he appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

He admitted stealing the phone and told officers he had sold it for £20.

Officers are keen to find the phone so the woman’s family can inform her friends of her death.
