Olympic knight leads bikers on day of cycling celebration

GOING OVER old ground proved a pleasurable day out for Sir Bradley Wiggins as he took to two wheels to revisit the route which brought him Olympic glory in London 2012.

The cycling star and Tour de France winner donned a Team Sky jersey during a wet and windy race involving thousands of members of the public.

Sir Bradley was joined by an army of amateur riders taking part in yesterday’s Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic.

The 86-mile route, which was reduced from 125 because of bad weather, set off from Queen Elizabeth Park in Stratford and finished up outside Buckingham Palace.

The action-packed event saw loved-up couple Gary Watson, 44, and Lisa Russell, 41, take a brief breather from the racing action so that they could get married. The keen cyclists stopped off at Richmond Park’s Pembroke Lodge, where they tied the knot in Lycra.

Meanwhile, proof that the Grand Départ’s legacy lives on was evident in Yorkshire.

Hardy souls braved the heavy rain to take part in public and elite events – Sheffield’s traffic free Sky Ride for all ages and abilities and the first-ever Pontefract cycling Grand Prix.
