‘Outsider’ who became favourite honoured

Jockey Frankie Dettori admitted feeling slightly out of place as he was made an honorary doctor of science at a ceremony in Cambridge.

He left his native Italy as a teenager with little formal education to become a stable lad in Newmarket, but his numerous achievements on the racecourse have led to him becoming a household name.

As well as riding all seven winners at Ascot in 1996, he has collected virtually every major prize in the world and landed his 500th Group race earlier this month.
