Paddick takes his seat in the Lords

The Liberal Democrat’s two-time London mayoral candidate Brian Paddick has taken his seat in the House of Lords.

Lord Paddick, 55, is a former deputy assistant commissioner
of the Metropolitan Police and stood for the Liberal Democrats in the 2008 and 2012 mayoral elections.

He was one of the 30 new
party political peers who were announced by Prime Minister David Cameron in August.

Sir Stephen Sherbourne, who was political secretary to then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher between 1983 and 1988 and chief of staff to Michael Howard when he was leader of the opposition, was also introduced to the House.

Lord Sherbourne of Didsbury, 68, was flanked as he took the oath of allegiance to the Queen by two fellow Tories – his former boss Lord Howard of Lympne and Leader of the House, Lord Hill of Oareford.

Lord Paddick was supported yesterday by his fellow Liberal Democrats Baroness Barker
and Lord Macdonald of River Glaven.
