Post-mortem results revealed that Jean Redfern died from asphyxiation and Sarah Redfern from severe head injuries.

Speaking after the deaths on July 22, neighbours in the quiet, tree-lined Sandygate said that Mrs Redfern and her daughter were “inseparable” and described the family as a “unit”. Miss Redfern worked at the Bon Marche clothing store in nearby Rotherham.

A family statement released shortly afterwards described Mrs Redfern as “a much-loved sister and aunt” and Miss Redfern as “a wonderful, kind and loving niece and cousin”.

Mrs Redfern’s sister-in-law said at the time of their funeral: “Both Jean and Sarah were extremely thoughtful and shared a love of shopping and holidays in Whitby.

“They were both so welcoming and will be sadly missed by the whole family.”
