Picture this: 40 years of shooting stars

In four decades, most of the greatest names in showbusiness, and a few notorious ones, have stood and smiled in front of the lens of Dave Hogan, and yesterday a collection of his most memorable snaps went on display.

Hogan made his name taking pictures for magazines and the tabloids, and his subjects have included Sir Paul McCartney, Freddie Mercury, Madonna and the Rolling Stones.

Hogie’s Heroes, his exhibition at London’s new Trafalgar St James gallery, has been staged to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Some of the pictures, signed by their subjects, will be auctioned online.

Sir Bob Geldof, one of the musicians to have been caught by Hogan’s lens, send he knew of no-one who didn’t like or respect the photographer. “His magnificent photographs both from the actual moment and from his studio tell the stories of our time for good or ill,” Sir Bob said.

The singer Tina Turner is said to have a print of Hogan’s shot of her dancing with David Bowie, on stage in Birmingham, on her grand piano at home.

Hogan’s library also includes the famous picture of the actress Elizabeth Hurley in a low-cut, safety-pinned Versace dress, posing with her then partner, Hugh Grant.
