Police to rename teams in bid to end confusion

POLICE chiefs are planning to change the name of their flagship safer neighbourhood teams after research revealed that most people don’t know what they are.

The teams, or SNTs as they are known in force jargon, were introduced several years ago in forces across the country and are made up of officers responsible for tackling crime in a certain area.

But a survey carried out by South Yorkshire Police has revealed that only 41 per cent of people questioned in the county knew their area was covered by an SNT.

Senior officers said 57 per cent of people were more familiar with the term neighbourhood police, which will be adopted as the name for the teams in the near future.
