Queen misses her date with Angelina

With a nod to the Duchess of Sussex's style book, another Hollywood actress stepped out yesterday for what should have been her own date with Royalty.

Unfortunately for Angelina Jolie, the Queen, nursing a summer cold and feeling “under the weather”, had to pull out of the engagement, a service at St Paul’s, marking the 200th anniversary of the Order of Michael and St George.

Ms Jolie, who was not on the guest list at last month’s wedding, had been invited as the recipient of an honour from the Order, which is granted by the Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister, for distinguished services in connection with foreign affairs.

The actress and filmmaker, who is also a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, looked elegant in a simple and fitted stone-coloured mid-calf dress with matching gloves.

Her matching hat boasted a fascinator of the type popularised this year by the Duchess.

Ms Jolie was seen chatting to the former Labour Defence Secretary and Nato secretary general Lord Robertson, who attended in his role as chancellor of the order and was part of the main procession along with Sir Jeremy Greenstock, Britain’s former ambassador to the UN.

The cathedral is the home of the Chapel of the Order of St Michael and St George, which was formally dedicated in 1906.

The Queen, who is known for her strong constitution and no-fuss approach to her infrequent illnesses, was represented at the service by the Duke of Kent, the Grand Master of the Order.

The Palace said her cold would not prevent her from travelling to Windsor for the weekend. Last month, when she had eye surgery to remove a cataract, she was treated as a day patient and did not cancel any appearances, but was spotted wearing sunglasses.

In 2016, as she turned 90, she withdrew from overseas trips.
