Regeneration staff paid more than £150,000 in bonuses

STAFF working for a private company set up to lead Bradford’s regeneration were paid bonuses of more than £150,000 during the firm’s existence.

Bradford Centre Regeneration, which never employed more than 11 people, awarded an average of £26,120 a year in bonuses during its six year lifespan. In all bonuses totalling £156,725 were paid between 2003/04 and 2007/08, with nearly a third of this going to chief executive Maud Marshall.

Figures obtained by the Yorkshire Post show that she was handed more than £55,000 in performance-related payments on top of her salary, which averaged more than £120,000 during her tenure.

The bonuses were awarded by the BCR board of local councillors, civil servants and business leaders, who assessed her performance on a year-by-year basis. Minutes of the Appointments and Compensation Committee consistently agreed to pay bonuses amounting to up to 10 per cent of Ms Marshall’s salary,

In 2008 staff were awarded bonuses totalling more than £42,000 despite Ms Marshall acknowledging that progress on key projects had fallen short of expectation.

Records show she received a bonus worth ten per cent of her salary for four years between 2004/5 and 2007/8. No bonuses were claimed by BCR staff in either 2008/09 or 2009/10 before the firm was shut down by the council.
