Retiring Major honoured in a roundabout sort of way

It was all swings and roundabouts for a Major on his last working day at the world’s largest driving school.

Major Terry Cavender was surprised when colleagues and friends had a roundabout at the Defence of School of Transport, Leconfield, East Yorkshire, named after him. The Cavender roundabout will be just outside the Headquarters building where he has worked for many years.

Maj Cavender joined the Royal Army Service Corps in January 1963 and retired 30 years later from the Royal Corps of Transport after serving in the Far East, West Germany and Northern Ireland.

He then joined the Army School of Mechanical Transport, now the Defence School of Transport, as a retired officer dealing with accommodation and eventually protocol.

His role as Press officer brought him into contact with celebrities who visited the school, including most recently, TV presenter Jeremy Kyle.

Maj Cavender, who lives in Beverley, also had a present for the headquarters – a Monkey Puzzle tree – which he planted in the centre of the Cavender Roundabout.

He said: “The roundabout was a lovely surprise and I was absolutely thrilled that everyone had taken the time to make my last day so memorable. I have worked with so many nice people and I shall miss them all.”
