Royal salute

The Queen poses with soldiers from The Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry in Staffordshire following a homecoming service at Lichfield Cathedral, to mark their return from Afghanistan. The Queen also handed out campaign medals.

Later she laid a wreath at the National Memorial Arboretum, which held a service of commemoration for those killed on duty in Afghanistan.

A spokesman for the arboretum said there were 112 deaths in 2010, one of the largest tolls of the last 20 years. The memorial service was also attended by relatives and comrades of those killed serving in the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.
