The same street but where’s the party?

In 1981, siblings Matthew and Emma Smart took centre stage in a street part for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Di as they posed as mini-versions of the Royal couple.

Now the pair, 32 and 35 respectively, have returned to the same street 30 years on in anticipation of William and Kate’s nuptials only to find there won’t be a similar event this time around.

The brother and sister were dressed up in their outfits when Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer tied the knot on July 29, 1981 and joined in a huge bash on their narrow terraced street.

Little Matthew wore a military outfit while his big sister wore a floaty white wedding dress – made from her gran’s net curtains – complete with a veil and bouquet of flowers.

Police officer Emma, a mother to one-year-old Finlay, who now lives in Rotherham, said: “Matthew was only two so can’t remember anything but it’s pretty vivid for me, it was a wonderful day. Every single house had bunting and Union Jacks on it, it was a legendary day and I can still remember a lot of it even though it was 30 years ago.

Matthew, a welder, lives a couple of miles away in Ossett, He said: “Times have changed and I’m pretty sure there won’t be anything like that party for Prince William and Kate’s wedding. It’s a shame really.”
