Scottish voters must think carefully, says the Queen

THE QUEEN has stepped into the debate over Scottish independence after she reportedly said she hoped voters will “think very carefully about the future” ahead of this week’s referendum.

The monarch was said to have made the comment yesterday after attending a Sunday morning church service at Crathie Kirk near her Balmoral estate.

The Queen reportedly told a well-wisher in the crowd: “Well, I hope people will think very carefully about the future.”

It follows earlier reports which had claimed the Queen was growing increasingly concerned that Scotland will vote on Thursday 
to break away from the rest of the UK.

Buckingham Palace issued a statement last week which said the Queen’s “constitutional impartiality is an established principle of our democracy” which she has “demonstrated throughout her reign”.

The statement added: “As such the monarch is above politics and those in political office have a duty to ensure this remains the case. Any suggestion the Queen would wish to influence the outcome of the current referendum campaign is categorically wrong. Her Majesty is simply of the view this is a matter for the people of Scotland.”

Meanwhile, ex-footballer David Beckham has become the latest big name to support the Better Together campaign. He urged Scottish voters not to ditch a bond which was “the envy of the entire world”.
