Big-hearted Curtis is to swim the equivalent of the English Channel in his local swimming pool, adding up to 1,344 lengths.

Curtis said: “I love swimming so when my Daddy mentioned I could swim the channel and raise money for St Gemma’s Hospice I really wanted to do it.

“Although I am only six I’m going to swim 21 miles which equates to 1,344 lengths of a 25 metre swimming pool and I need to complete it within 12 weeks (which works out at 112 lengths per week) but I intend to try and do this much quicker, ideally before my birthday in May.”

Proud dad Tony Mewse, from Barwick-in-Elmet, said: “He is only 3ft 8 inches in height but is an incredible swimmer for his age.

“He has a natural ability that has helped him pass all the ASA swimming stages within an six to eight month period last year and is now in the competitive swimming group at John Smeaton swimming pool where they rarely take swimmers under the age of eight.”

In addition to his swim Curtis also plays football and is learning karate. More details about the challenge can be seen at uk.virginmoneygiving.com/CurtisMewse.
