"A story of hope, determination and, as a man who was Keighley born and bred, of true Yorkshire grit" Tributes paid across region to Captain Sir Tom Moore after his death aged 100

Keighley born Captain Sir Tom Moore said last year that his home county of Yorkshire had always remained in his heart, and he was proudly welcomed back with open arms last year after he was made an honorary colonel in Harrogate.

And tributes were paid by leaders across the county this evening after news broke of his death, aged 100.

On a visit to the town’s Army Training College in August last year, Captain Sir Tom was given a full military escort as he met with recruits, and was made honorary colonel of the site with the approval of the Queen.

The Yorkshire Regiment joined Captain Sir Tom for a guard of honour on the day he completed his now legendary challenge to walk 100 laps around his garden to raise millions of pounds for NHS charities.

It was just one of many accolades bestowed upon him by proud leaders of the region.

Keighley Town Council made Captain Sir Tom a freeman of the town, and installed a huge sign celebrating his achievements in the town centre.

He was also the guest of honour at the virtual opening of Harrogate’s Nightingale Hospital.

Tonight Yorkshire’s leaders paid tribute to Captain Sir Tom.

The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, said: “Captain Sir Tom Moore has been an inspiration to us all.

"His courage and determination to step out and make a difference inspired a nation.

"Our prayers go to his family and friends. In a small way, we share their loss. But in a huge way we are given heart to step out ourselves, no matter our age or circumstance. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.”

Keighley MP Robbie Moore said: "Keighley has lost one of its finest today, and I know people right across our town, and the whole of Yorkshire will be sending their sympathy, love and best wishes to his daughters Hannah and Lucy, as well as the whole family.

“Captain Sir Tom Moore had a remarkable life, and was an inspiration to us all. He brought the whole country together during our dark times and showed his true Yorkshire grit and determination to raise over £30 million for our incredible NHS.

"Keighley is exceptionally proud of Captain Sir Tom and his memory will no doubt live on for decades to come.”

Susan Hinchcliffe, leader of Bradford Council, said: "The huge amount of money he raised for the NHS showed how his efforts inspired people, not just in the UK but all around the world.

"It was a story of hope, determination and, as a man who was Keighley born and bred, of true Yorkshire grit.

"Captain Sir Tom was one of the heroes of the Covid-19 pandemic, but, as well as that, he was a remarkable man whose compassion for the pandemic compelled him to do his bit to help despite his age."

Speaking in April last year, Captain Sir Tom said: “I have been amazed and humbled by the reaction of the strong people of Yorkshire, I have so many happy memories of living in this most wonderful county.”

“I would like to thank them all for supporting me. Yorkshire and my home town of Keighley remain in my heart.”
