London Fashion Week got under way yesterday and organisers at the British Fashion Council (BFC) hope that the five-day event previewing the autumn/winter trends and featuring more than 40 catwalk shows will lead to more than £100m in orders.

According to BFC chairman Natalie Massanet, the British fashion industry is worth £26bn to the country’s economy – a figure which has grown by 20 per cent over the last four years.

The top names are again among the high-profile fashion labels showing their latest collections at the event this year.

Big names include Burberry, Julien Macdonald and Vivienne Westwood.

London Mayor Boris Johnson heralded the importance of the showpiece, saying: “London Fashion Week is a fabulous showcase of what makes London one of the most exciting and dynamic cities on Earth – its creativity.

“With the Baftas and the Brits taking place at the same time, let’s celebrate the great British talent that is acclaimed around the world.”

The British leather goods brand Mulberry is staging a photocall rather than a catwalk event as a result of not yet having appointed a new creative director following Emma Hill’s departure last year.

In a teaser for Sunday’s event, the label has released a seconds-long film

It shows 21-year-old model Cara Delevingne strolling through a train station and getting into a black cab and ending with her saying: “See you Sunday.”

The film was released on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ with a #SeeYouSunday hashtag.

Meanwhile, those looking for some relief from the weather might be cheered by Wellington boot brand Hunter Original’s latest collection to be presented today.
