Take That and ‘riot’ dancers get Brits under way

Take That kicked off this year’s Brit Awards with a show-stopping performance of their new single Kidz.

All five members of the band took the stage at the O2 in Greenwich, south-east London, accompanied by an advance guard of dancers dressed like riot police complete with branded shields.

It was the routine they were meant to perform at the X Factor final which was reportedly axed by show boss, Simon Cowell, shortly after clashes between police and students over university tuition fees.

But, despite the group setting the pace, the evening looked to belong to Tinie Tempah who had picked up two awards within an hour of the show getting under way – British Breakthrough Act as well as Best British Single for Pass Out.

Picking up the first, the rapper, who grew up down the road from the O2 in Plumstead, said: “I want to big up God and my family for sticking by me when times are hard.”

The star, real name Patrick Okogwu, was the most nominated artist of the night.

Best British Male Solo Artist went to Plan B, who also performed his hit single, while International Male Solo Artist award went to American singer Cee Lo Green. “My heart is racing,” he said “I’m so excited. Thank you so much for this honour. Such a pleasant surprise.”
