Thousands show their true colours

The parks, streets and communities of West Yorkshire were festooned with red, white and blue yesterday as the region celebrated the wedding of the future King and Queen of England.

From pensioners to toddlers, the West Riding was a picture of patriotic zeal as thousands came together to celebrate the wedding.

In Ilkley the town’s The Grove street was home to a large-scale street party with people from all over the town raising a glass to the happy couple and share in the happy day with neighbours and friends.

Resplendent in the red, white and blue of the Union Flag, mother and daughter Alison and Jean Cockburn were among those out in force in Ilkley to mark the big day.

The scenes were replicated in Leeds’ Calverley Park where Clara Jackson and Neve Isles watched on with joy as a big screen broadcast Prince William and his new wife sharing a kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

In Settle, Faye and Keiron Hunt had their faces painted with Union Jacks to mark the occasion. The brother and sister from Barrow-in-Furness, aged six and four respectively, were among scores attending the “Right Royal Wedding” celebration in the town.

Also painting his face for the day was six-year-old James Edwards, who was among those celebrating the big day at The Hunslet Club in Leeds.

In Ackworth, near Pontefract, five-year-old Abigail Wheater was among those enjoying the street party in King’s Close, darting across the street waving her flag.

Meanwhile, sisters Lucky and Rebecca Whitaker marked the day by wearing matching Union Jack dresses at their celebration in Adel, Leeds.

Still in Leeds, two-year-old Sidra Kauser was among scores who attended a street party on Oakwood’s Arlington Grove.
