Thousands of supporters pay tribute at Elland Road to memory of Gary Speed

Emotions ran high both inside and outside of Elland Road this weekend as thousands of Leeds United fans remembered the club’s former player Gary Speed.

Saturday’s match with Millwall was the first home game at Leeds since Speed’s death last weekend.

Outside the main stand, hundreds of fans ringed the statue of Billy Bremner which has become a shrine to the memory of Speed.

Thousands of shirts, scarves and other memorabilia have been draped around the statue and hundreds more were added as fans left tribute after tribute. Many were in tears as they stood in silence in a circle around the statue. Inside the packed stadium, there was more emotion as the teams stood in the centre of the pitch for a minute’s applause which was punctuated with chants of Speed’s name.

His widow Louise and their two sons watched from the stands while his old midfield colleagues Gordon Strachan, Gary McAllister and David Batty laid wreaths on the pitch.

Speed was a mainstay of the Leeds championship-winning team in 1992 before becoming a Newcastle favourite.

Further tributes were held at grounds up and down the country over the weekend.
