‘Twenty shot dead’ by president’s troops

Anti-government protesters demonstrate yesterday in Sanaa demanding the resignation of embattled Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

It came as soldiers loyal to the president stormed a protest camp in the southern city of Taiz and fired on the crowds indiscriminately, killing at least 20 people, a medical official said. The city has been a hotbed of anti-government protests since crowds began calling for him to go in early February.

Yemeni warplanes also carried out airstrikes on the town of Zinjibar, seized by hundreds of Islamic militants over the weekend, witnesses said, as the political crisis surrounding the president descended into more bloodshed.
