Parts of the country saw the mercury rise past 20C on the first day of British summertime yesterday, reaching a maximum of 20.4C at St James’s Park in London. This made the capital hotter than Madrid, the Balearic Islands and the French Riviera.

The hot spring weather will remain for much of the week ahead, according to Met Office meteorologist Eleanor Crompton.

In Yorkshire, the Met Office predicts a “cloudy, grey start with fog in places” today, with a maximum temperature of 15C. It will stay mostly cloudy and cool near the coasts but be brighter inland. Showers are expected later.

For the rest of the week, forecasters say the weather will stay “generally warm with spells of hazy sunshine, although rather cloudy at times with a chance of thundery showers”.
