Warning of more snow as spring put on hold

THE region is facing more snow as winter continues to keep the country in its icy grip.

Scotland and parts of the north of England were hit by further snowfalls yesterday.

The snow led to the closure of Leeds Bradford Airport at 6am leading to delays or cancellations for a number of flights after up to 1.5in (3.8cm) of snow fell in the Leeds area.

Police also closed the A66 across the Pennines between Bowes, County Durham, and Stainmore, Cumbria, because of heavy snow.

Temperatures were due to drop below freezing again last night across the region as the Met Office issued severe weather warnings for parts of Scotland and the North East today amid warnings of as much as 10in (25cm) of snow over hills as blizzards develop.

Forecasters said some snow showers could affect the Pennines further south in coming days but are warning more severe snow could hit Yorkshire on Friday, coupled with strong easterly winds.

The bad weather will mean the cargo ship MV Danio which
ran aground on Saturday on rocks in the Farne Islands, three
miles off the Northumberland coast, will stay put for at least a week.

The Danio was heading from Perth to Antwerp, Belgium, when it got caught on rocks near the Longstone Lighthouse.

The vessel, carrying timber, was badly damaged but there were no reports of any fuel leak.

The Farne Islands are internationally known for being home to thousands of puffins, as well as 6,000 grey seals and more than 20 breeding bird species.
