Washing machines to display running costs

Up to 500 volunteers will help shoppers at John Lewis in London’s Oxford Street compare, switch and potentially save money by thinking of using more energy-efficient goods.

Swapping an old washer dryer could save £500 in lifetime energy costs and 84 per cent of people have not switched energy supplier in the last year, potentially missing out on up to £158 savings on energy bills, according to Energy Secretary Edward Davey.

He is to say at the launch: “In the past, people have had no idea how much their appliances will add to their energy bills.

“Now consumers will be able to see clear, simple information on the lifetime electricity costs for appliances like washing machines and tumble dryers.”

Around 500 volunteers will be trained through the Big Energy Saving Network – one of their aims will be to raise awareness among vulnerable people such as pensioners of how to get help.
