Women’s wartime role to be marked

A SERIES of events to mark the role of women during the First World War are to take place this month, coinciding with International Women’s Day.

The contribution by women from 1914-18 will be a focus of centenary commemorations, with a programme of exhibitions, events and activities planned to commemorate their contribution during the Great War.

Part of a five-year programme of commemorative events organised by the First World War Centenary Partnership, many will take place this month to mark International Women’s Day, which falls tomorrow.

Partnership organisations from across the UK will mark the contribution made by women from 1914-18 as the nation celebrates the centenary of the Great War.

Culture Secretary Maria Miller, who is leading the Government’s First World War Centenary Programme, said: “Women rose to the challenge during the First World War, often defying cultural and social barriers to achieve quite incredible things at the front and back at home.

“Whether at local community level or more nationally, the spread and depth of the cultural events on offer today to commemorate their achievements is inspiring and I am delighted that the contribution of women during the war years will be a focus of the Centenary Partnership.”

The First World War Centenary Partnership, established by Imperial War Museums in 2010, is presenting a programme of events and activities from 2014-18 to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

Made up of 2,485 not-for-profit cultural and educational organisations from 45 countries across the world, its international programme is hoped to help millions of people discover more about life during the conflict.

Partnership events due to take place this month across the country comprise of exhibitions, including one at London’s National Portrait Gallery; talks; lectures and plays and performances.
